The Joy of Practice
Born and raised in Philadelphia, I was homeschooled until 8th grade, and practiced gymnastics from a young age until high school. Attended Chestnut Hill Academy and graduated in 2004. I competed in the 2002 USAG Junior Olympic national championships for men’s level 2. I also participated in the Fédération Française de Gymnastique Men’s National Team Championships in 2003. I studied English Literature and History and Sociology of Science at the U. of Penn and graduated with high honors in 2008.
I started yoga in 2003, practicing Mysore-style Ashtanga yoga. and taught my first classes soon after in 2004. Since then I have:
- Trained with David Swenson in Ontario, Canada in Ashtanga yoga, 2008.
- Traveled to Mysore, India and practiced there in the Summer of 2010 under two teachers, Bharath Shetty and Dhanya Kumar.
- Taught numerous classes in Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Hatha Yoga styles as a freelance yoga teacher, 2008-2010.
- Attended six semesters studying Iyengar Yoga with Joan White, 2009-2012.
- Completed Bikram Teacher Training, Fall 2010.
- Opened Tapasya Hot Yoga and Karma Studios in West Philly in 2012.
- Taught over 1,500 hot yoga classes since 2010.
- Conducted workshops on Yoga Nidra, Pranayama, Sun Salutation and Yogic Meditation.
- Developed the Hot Yoga Dynamics class in 2014.
- Completed Yogic Studies 1 through the North American Yoga Academy (YANA), 2014.
- Currently enrolled in Yogic Studies 2 and Yoga Nidra Teacher Training through YANA.
I am a lifelong reader and student, particularly interested in holistic nutrition, zen Buddhism, analytical psychology, comparative study of religions — and anything related to the philosophy and practice of yoga, especially as it has spread out of Rishikesh and the Himalayan region.
You will know Dewey for his enthusiasm and energetic good nature. He is a wealth of information, with a deep background in subjects such as martial arts, yoga, running and natural foods. He is an inspiration as a family man and possesses a great of patience and compassion for all. He is the kind of friend or mentor who can find the humor and the silver lining in any situation.
Emily teaches from the heart and leads by example. She holds space for her yoga students to explore their own bodies and find their true path. She is a thoughtful friend to all she meets, who knows the real value of deep listening. She incorporates yoga classes in her work with trauma victims, as a therapeutic tool for self healing. She is a veritable reservoir of curiosity and insight.
Kimberly’s energetic personality is reflected in her tremendous productivity and the scope of her efforts. She is a dancer, choreographer, costume designer and coach affiliated with several dance companies in Philadelphia and New Jersey. Her approach to yoga is both disciplined and graceful. She knows the value of hard work over a long time, foresight and organization. She inspires students to persevere in their own practice with careful attention and regularity, and you can trust her to step in or stand up for what she believes in.
Jessica is a dedicated practitioner who learns in the most yogic way possible: slowly and surely. She is dependable and determined, deliberate and precise. She has a background in various yoga schools, with an emphasis on Bikram and Tapasya styles. She loves dogs, and she loves to get away from the city to spend time at her cabin in Maine. Keep your ears open for her understated and wry sense of humor. She will charm you with the freshness of her insights.
Kristen is a science teacher and coach for track and lacrosse. She likes to read, she is always learning, and she applies what she learns with careful attention. She exemplifies dedication and precise practice over time. She is ever ready to come back tomorrow and keep on living in the moment. She loves her dogs and Cape Cod, and she can always inject a little bit of sarcasm in a light hearted moment.
Lauren is talkative, easy going and forthright. She is a lover of plants and dogs, with a passion for Buddhist theology. She has a lifetime of experience practicing yoga, studying deeply in Baptiste, Bikram and Tapasya styles, and she is always looking forward for more opportunities to grow and develop herself. A mother of three, she is devoted and helpful, ready to engage with whatever might need some love and attention.
Carter is a landscape artist by trade. He thrives working with his hands, where he is free to imagine and build his vision in partnership and connection with the natural world. His background includes deep study of jiu-jitsu and over a decade of training in hatha yoga. He is a physical culturist who carries the true force of will. He inspires a calm and deliberate form of motivation and encourages students to do their best by staying centered and true to themselves.
